Celluma and COVID
At the start of 2020, no one could foresee the strange twist this year would take, including Biophotas. But the COVID crisis forced us all to change the way we lived our lives and conducted business. We immediately understood the impact this would have not only on our team, but also on you, our customers.
Celluma’s Commitment to Compassion
“One of our organizational cornerstones is a commitment to “compassion” . . . the caring for all those who come in contact with the company. Our first response to the COVID crisis was to ensure that our team members, our suppliers and most importantly, our customers, were safe and healthy, and had the resources to remain so. Beyond that, we feel we have an obligation to take care of our community. We possess unique skills and capacities, whether it be financial, human or manufacturing capital and we are leveraging all three to produce medical-grade face shields that are so critically needed by healthcare workers around the world. It’s our little way of being a part of the solution.” - Patrick Johnson, CEO and Inventor of the Celluma.
Celluma is the only Light Therapy device with protective, disposable Hygiene Barriers. Almost immediately, we made these Barriers available at no charge to Practitioners. Hygiene Barriers available for the following Celluma devices:
- Celluma PRO/iPRO
- Celluma SKIN
- Celluma SPORT
- Celluma HOME
- Celluma FACE
- Celluma CLEAR
- Celluma LITE/iLITE
Celluma Light Therapy also quickly donated $2,500 to the Esthetics Council. CEO Patrick Johnson explains why: “Susanne and the Esthetics Counsel do a great job on behalf of all the Estheticians across the country, advocating for their legal rights to practice their chosen profession. And she is always available to take our calls or answer our e-mails when we need an expert opinion. The Estheticians are the life blood of our business and we challenge all the other companies in the industry to match or better our $2,500 donation. It’s a tough time for everyone right now, but now is when we need to give the most. We all have a vested interest in supporting the practitioners who make our businesses possible. Give early, give often!"
Bridging the Care Gap
Once it became clear COVID-19 wasn’t going away any time soon, we began to research longer term solutions for our customers. As travel was restricted and we were forced to stay close to home, it became clear that in-home solutions were necessary.
As we have seen in recent months, sometimes in-person treatment is just not an option and your clients may not be able to come see you for an extended period of time. No person has been unaffected by this pandemic and we want you to know that we are here to help you stay connected to your clients and stay in business through these difficult times.
While there is no replacement for your expertise, knowledge, and caring touch, we have created solutions to bridge the care gap for your clients when in-person treatment just isn’t an option. We have no-touch options to help you generate income through our Reseller and Retail Programs. Additionally, we can help you set-up a Rental Program so you can rent your Celluma device to your clients and keep them on protocol. We also have virtual education and marketing support available as well. With 11 affordable LED models for home and spa use, your clients can maintain light therapy benefits between appointments with devices starting at just $299. And remember, Celluma is a true whole body, whole family wellness device which can be used by everyone in the home, including beloved pets.
“When I was forced to close our spa doors due to COVID-19, we had get creative to keep a revenue stream coming in. Our clients are in need of facials,
but how can we treat when we were mandated to shut down? Celluma!! The Reseller and drop-ship program allowed me to treat my clients at a
distance, without having to buy product. I’m thankful to Celluma for changing their protocol so we could drop ship and not have to buy stock
during this uncertain time. Thanks Celluma!”

Celluma LED Light Therapy & COVID Related Testimonials
As the pandemic has lingered through 2020, we began to get feedback of a different kind. No longer was it about business solutions, but it was very specific comments related to Covid-19 symptoms. We won’t use full names to protect the user’s privacy but Angela G., a customer from Baton Rouge shared that she had contracted the Covid-19 and her doctor wanted her hospitalized. She desperately did not want to be admitted so she began laying under her Celluma DELUX for an hour. She said the results were amazing. It made her breathing less painful where she could take full breaths and her overall oxygen level also increased dramatically and she did not have to be admitted to the hospital. She wanted everyone to know how thankful she was for her Celluma and hoped her experience would help someone else.
One of our newest Resellers, Gisella E. from Miami, has been in business for 27 years and recently contracted Covid-19. She said the pain in her lungs and back was unbearable. She was nearing hospitalization and started using her Celluma PRO on her back. It reduced the pain immediately and her cough improved. She said it kept her out of the hospital and off a ventilator.
While we would never claim to treat the Covid-19 virus*, Celluma light therapy can help to address the side effects of some of the symptoms, namely inflammation, as well as muscle and joint pain. Celluma is actually FDA-cleared to increased circulation and reduce inflammation. But don’t take our word for it, read what leading light therapy researcher, Michael Hamblin PhD, of the Wellman Center for Photomedicine, had to say in a 2017 paper. “One of the most reproducible effects of PBM (photobiomodulation is another name for low-level light therapy) is an overall reduction in inflammation, which is particularly important for disorders of the joints, traumatic injuries, lung disorders, and in the brain. PBM can reduce inflammation in the brain, abdominal fat, wounds, lungs, and spinal cord.”

Mechanisms and applications of the anti-inflammatory effects of photobiomodulation.

They also studied a different model of ALI caused by intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R), that produces an analogue of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) . Rats were subjected to superior mesenteric artery occlusion (45 min) and received PBM (660 nm, 7.5 J/cm2) carried out by irradiating the rats on the skin over the right upper bronchus for 15 and 30 min, and rats were euthanized 30 min, 2, or 4 h later. PBM reduced lung edema, myeloperoxisdase activity, TNF-α and iNOS, LLLT increased IL-10 in the lungs of animals subjected to I/R.
A third animal model was related to asthma . Mice were sensitized to ovalbumin (OVA), and then challenged by a single 15-min exposure to aerosolized OVA. PBM was applied as above (660 nm, 30 mW, 5.4 J). Bronchial hyper-responsiveness (as measured by dose response curves to acetylcholine) was reduced by PBM as well as reductions in eosinophils and eotaxin. PBM also diminished expression of intracellular adhesion molecule and Th2 cytokines, as well as signal transducer and activator of transduction 6 (STAT6) levels in lungs from challenged mice. Recently Rigonato-Oliveira et al. presented a study that concluded that the reduced lung inflammation and the positive effects of PBM on the airways appear to be mediated by increased secretion of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, and reduction of mucus in the airway .
How Light Therapy Reduces Pain
Poor circulation and the lack of oxygen and other essential molecules (i.e., glucose, Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)) in blood vessels can cause pain or a lack of sensation. Light energy stimulates the release of nitric oxide, causing blood vessels to increase in diameter (vasodilation) and allowing more blood flow, oxygen, and other important nutrients to be delivered to the tissue. This increase in oxygen and nutrients, along with stimulation of the light energy emitted from Celluma increases ATP production, which activates pain relieving pathways. This decreases pain and inflammation, and increases tissue regeneration in the localized area.
Here at Celluma, we continue to explore new indications for LED light therapy, design innovative products and to conduct clinical trials to assess efficacy and applications. Speak with our Clinical Specialists to answer any questions you may have Monday-Friday from 7AM-5PM Pacific.
